What Is an Externally Fed Rotary Drum Screen?
An externally fed rotary drum screen is a solid-liquid separation machine used in front-end wastewater pretreatment. Wastewater flows onto the external surface of the rotating drum, while the wedge wire screen intercepts suspended solids and allows filtered water to pass through.
This equipment is widely used before DAF units, MBR systems, biological treatment systems, and other downstream wastewater treatment processes. By removing solids at the beginning of the process, it helps reduce clogging risk and improves overall treatment stability.
Externally Fed Rotary Drum Screen vs. Traditional Bar Screen
Compared with traditional bar screens, the externally fed rotary drum screen provides finer filtration accuracy and better removal of small suspended solids. Traditional bar screens mainly rely on bar spacing to intercept large solids, while the rotary drum screen uses a continuous wedge wire screen surface for more precise separation.
The equipment can operate continuously with automatic cleaning, which helps reduce manual maintenance and supports a more stable pretreatment process.

Main Structure of the Externally Fed Rotary Drum Screen
The externally fed rotary drum screen is mainly composed of the rotary drum screen, frame, drive unit, washing system, and water outlet system. The wedge wire structure provides high filtration accuracy and good water flow capacity.

Configuration Options
The rotary drum screen can be configured according to wastewater type, impurity characteristics, and operating requirements. Different slot openings can also be selected according to customer requirements.
Option 1: With Brush StructureSuitable for wastewater containing more fibers, hair, sticky impurities, or solids that easily adhere to the screen surface. The brush helps clean the screen surface, reduce clogging, and improve continuous operation stability. |
Option 2: Without Brush StructureSuitable for wastewater with relatively loose and non-adhesive solids. This structure is simpler, easier to maintain, and suitable for general solid-liquid separation applications. |
Applications of Externally Fed Rotary Drum Screen
The externally fed rotary drum screen is mainly used for wastewater pretreatment. It can remove suspended solids, fibers, plastic particles, food residues, and other impurities before downstream equipment.
Municipal WastewaterUsed for municipal and domestic wastewater pretreatment. |
Food Processing WastewaterSuitable for food, fruit and vegetable, beverage, meat processing, and dairy wastewater. |
Paper Mill & Textile WastewaterUsed in paper mills, textile plants, printing, and dyeing wastewater treatment. |
